John Maina Mwangi

John Maina Mwangi, popularly known as John Boog, is an award-winning digital consultant and the brains behind several leading campaigns for corporations, brands and individuals in Kenyan society. An expert at social media communications and internet marketing, John serves as Senior Strategy & Communications Advisor to Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and has worked with him for many years, helping to craft the strategy that got the businessman elected first to Parliament and then to the Senate. In 2012, John came up with the idea of the Sonko Rescue Team Initiative to provide vital ambulance and hearse services, fire services, emergency security, automobile breakdown services and clean drinking water to his constituents. SRT was coopted and closed by local government in 2015. At the time it employed over 1000 young people and has helped tens of thousands across Nairobi.

John has also been critical in the development and operations of several noteworthy initiatives including the very successful food relief and drought alleviation initiative, Kenyans for Kenya, a huge national campaign in which €7.7 million was donated via mobiles phones. Through his company J Boog Media, John’s clients have included the largest mall in East and Central Africa, a production company which makes local government films, a South African Supermarket chain, the Kenyan Ministry of Sports & Culture, Swala Dance Crew, and Musician Mike Murimi Wamunyororo. At the 2016 Africa Political Summit, John's work with Sonko Rescue Team was honored with a Diamond Award for "Outstanding Use of Social Media".
